Another great day aboard the Big Mac!!!

 

  Everyone arrived at the boat around 5:15 am and began loading the boat, by 6am the lines were being tossed and the boat was pulling away, for our 60 mile run to the Indian Arrow.

   The Indian Arrow was a tanker sunk in WWII by the U-103.  She was a sister ship of the Dixie Arrow, which was sunk off Hatteras, NC.  Today the India Arrow sits almost completely turtle at the bottom of the ocean in 190 ft of water.

   After a semi bumpy ride we made it to the wreck site of the Indian Arrow.  Tom Packer & Steve Gatto went down to tie into the wreck and with in a short time Tom's voice came in through the underwater com, "Where in".  A few seconds later we knew where we were tied in because over the com came, damn that's a huge prop.

   The next divers in were Brandon McWilliam and Bill Bedford, shortly followed by Jeff Graham and myself.  Before I hit the water I was given the task of tying another line into the chain to help secure the anchor.

   As I dropped down the anchor line I watched my depth gage to get an idea of when the wreck was going to come into view, 110, 120, 130 then finally at 140 ft I could see the top of the wreck starting about 160 ft down.  I quickly dropped to the anchor and within 6 mins of my dive I had the new line secure, while Jeff was off hunting those allusive scallops.  Him and I then headed to the stern to see one the most spectacular site, the huge prop of the Indian Arrow was towering over everything, even with one blade missing it was still mighty impressive.  I then turned back and headed forward and saw a porthole with glass still intact, quickly I dropped under the decking to see if I could get to it but it was blocked by a bulk head.  I continued forward to were the anchor was tyed in and just to the side was a crack in the wreck.  As I swam in I could not see any ambient light until I dropped down under a over hang and could see a opening on the other side of the wreck.  I wanted to keep it simple and just head straight across the wreck looking throughout the debris for some artifacts.  On my return trip I looked to my right and could see a tunnel heading forward into the wreck (I found out later that if you followed the tunnel it would lead to the break in the wreck were the boilers are).  I made it back to the anchor line at 20 min and began my ascent.

    Once back on the boat everyone was exchanging stories about the dive and what they saw.  Brandon recovered a cage light and an emergency light from his first dive.  He also mentioned to be about the porthole I saw then told me about the one I did not realize was there.  Also Tom and Steve located some of the letters of the Indian Arrow.

    On my second dive I was going to head in the tunnel to retrieve one of the many cage lights still lying there, but as I entered the wreck and headed forward there was a light sitting 15 ft inside (Thanks Tom).  My second plan was to try and knocked the swing plate off.  I worked on it for a while to only get the drift pin out halfway.  So I headed back to the anchor line, but at least I got a cage light.  My buddy Jeff scored a nice bag of scallops as well.

NICE,
I wish was could have been there.  This back thing is chewing me up.  This wreck has huge potential but because of it's distance offshore and bad reputation for being turtle few have ventured there.
